Willpower
"Brothers and sisters: Draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the Devil." (Ephesians 6:10-11)

Throughout my experience working with people who are trying to recover from drug abuse, I’ve realized that the biggest barrier they face is believing that, through their own willpower, they can overcome addiction. This mindset prevents them from seeking the necessary help, causing them to relapse over and over, until two things happen: either they recognize that they need a power greater than their own, or they lose hope and give up. I’ve observed this same way of thinking in others and also in myself when trying to overcome sin or a difficult situation.
In today’s reading, Paul urges us to find our strength in the infinite power of the Lord, to put on His armor to resist in difficult times and to achieve ultimate victory.
If you are struggling with a vice or sin or facing a complicated situation, don’t face it alone. Don’t make the mistake of trying to resolve it on your own, as this will only lead to despair. Seek the Lord at all times through prayer and the community of the Church. Trust in the infinite power of God and find your strength in the Holy Spirit.
What areas of your life are you trying to control on your own, and how could you allow God to be your source of strength instead of relying solely on your own willpower?
Come Holy Spirit, take my weakness and fill me with strength so I can come out victorious from the situation I am in. Amen.
