Pope Francis on Sunday said the Catholic Church must be open and welcoming toward others, warning that division and exclusion come from Satan.

To listen to the Holy Spirit, members of the church must listen to each other and especially to those who are marginalized, Pope Francis said.

Addressing Catholics from the Diocese of Rome, the pope noted that preparations for the synod would take place in three phases between October 2021 and October 2023.

Pope Francis made sure that while the world often disregards the young and the marginalized, in the Catholic Church, "no one ought ever to feel out of place or set aside."

The Vatican has released a preparatory document and handbook for the 2023 synod on synodality to be reviewed by all Catholic dioceses in the world over the next six months.
