Turning Our Gaze

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (John 6:51)

These last few weeks have been busy with wondering who the next pope will be. How long until we see white smoke? Who will be elected? What is needed in the church? So many anxieties that can divert our eyes from truth.

In today’s gospel, Jesus reminds us of what we truly need, Him. He reminds us that He is the bread of life and that with Him we can live forever. We are called to trust in something greater, not in the temporary or uncertain parts of our life. During this time whether you are anxious about the state of the church, the state of our country, or even different parts of your life, trust in Him.

Go to confession, Mass, and times of adoration. Spend time with Him who gives us His body as the life of the world. He is enough. He is faithful. He will lead you and His Church.

What are the anxieties that are drawing me away from the Lord? How can I turn my gaze back to Him?

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
*Prayer attributed to St. Alphonsus Liguori
