Treasured Friendship

"A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure." (Sirach 6:14)

In the First Reading for today, this verse reminds us of the importance of good and faithful friends in our lives. Throughout my first year in seminary, I have been abundantly blessed with faithful friends and brothers and would certainly describe them as a treasure given by God.

These friends that we meet and have in our lives are not just there for our benefit, but rather to help us navigate the challenges that life can present to us. This reading is a powerful reminder that a good friend is necessary and important, and that is who Christ is to us. He will always be a faithful friend to us, even when we are not faithful to Him. The Eucharist is surely a treasure, and if we have found Christ, then we have found a treasure as the First Reading describes.

How can we be a better friend to those around us?

Lord Jesus Christ, help me to be a faithful friend each and every day. Amen.

MatthewMatthew O’Neill is a seminarian for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. Before seminary, he went to Tampa Catholic High School (Go Crusaders!). Outside of seminary, he likes to go biking, cooking, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends. He first felt called to priesthood at a summer camp called Covecrest, in front of the Blessed Sacrament. What most drew him to the priesthood was the desire to serve others and the Sacraments, as well as a call to go deeper into his relationship with Christ.
