See the Grace of God

“When [Barnabas] arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart, for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith.” (Acts 11:23-24)

Where do you see the grace of God? As Catholics, we can confidently proclaim that we see the grace of God in the sacraments. Every time we receive the Eucharist or go to confession, we know that God’s grace is flowing.

God’s grace, however, is not confined to the sacraments. His grace moves through you every time you mess up, but desire to do better. His grace is with you every time someone cuts you off in traffic, and you don’t honk the horn. His grace is with you in a different but real way every time you call upon the Holy Spirit to guide your heart.

Barnabas, as we see in our scripture, was a good man who was filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit revealed to Barnabas in this time the true grace of God that was present in Antioch as people were learning about Jesus and turning to the Lord. This grace wasn’t present because they were perfect, but because they were learning to be faithful to the Lord.

Even in our small and humble actions today, the Lord is giving us grace. There is grace for this moment, whether you are courageously proclaiming the Gospel… or struggling just to read it to yourself. Remain faithful to the Lord, and let His grace propel you forward to where His Spirit guides.

Can you recall the last time you realized that God was giving you grace?

Lord, through your mercy and grace, guide our hearts towards you, and show us how to remain faithful to you in all things. Amen.
