Speaking Our Language
“While people were listening to Jesus speak, he proceeded to tell a parable.” (Luke 19:11)
“While people were listening to Jesus speak, he proceeded to tell a parable.” (Luke 19:11)
Have you wondered why Jesus spoke in parables? Well, what I have learned, is that Jesus spoke in parables to help people understand, what could otherwise, be considered a difficult teaching. Therefore, the parables used simple language, ideas, and cultural norms that the average person could understand. Basically, Jesus tried to meet the people where they were. What I love about Jesus, is that he continues to speak to each of us in parables.
That is, in ways that are distinct and unique to us. As I pray and listen to the Word of God, how I come to understand it is going to be completely different than how others understand the same scripture passage. Why? Because Jesus is meeting me where I am at. As I listen to Him, he is speaking to me through my experiences and my likes, relating to me in ways that may only make sense to me. For example, I am a huge “superhero” fan. I cannot tell you how many times, in prayer, the Lord has used superhero references to help me understand a particular scripture passage.
When I listen to God, it is as if he knows me so well, that he speaks my language. The cooler part about our God, is that he does the exact same thing for all His children who take the time to listen and pray. He approaches us and opens His Word, using descriptions, examples, and images that would only make sense to us. Why? Because that is how intimately known we are by our God. Our relationship is so personal and unique, that He can speak all our languages. Therefore, my encouragement to you, is to remain open and allow Jesus to speak to you in parables. If you do, understanding the Word of God will be much easier and it will penetrate your heart, mind, and soul on a much deeper level.
How does God uniquely speak to you?
God, thank you for your intimate and personal relationship with me and for speaking my unique language. Amen.
