Sharing God's Light

“Let there be light.” (Genesis 1:3)

Today's first reading is one we may all know quite well: the creation of heaven and earth. But have we ever considered what God is saying in this story?

We are told that God commands that light comes forward not for the sake of seeing but for life itself to flourish. The command by God for there to be light in the world is still relevant; arguably, it is a daily challenge for us Catholics. The Lord wants us to be light breaking the darkness as He did many times in salvation history, from the beginning to the Resurrection, and after the time of the early Church in great saints like Scholastica, whom we commemorate today.

Are you a light in our dark world? We constantly pray for God to shine forth amid the craziness of humanity. Why can't He shine forth through you?

My Lord and my God, you are the world's light; help us share your light! Amen.
