Remain in Truth
"Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, 'If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" (John 8:31-32)
"Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, 'If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" (John 8:31-32)
"The truth will set you free."
How many times have we heard this throughout our lives? It's a popular phrase (for good reason; Jesus Christ coined it), but one that can be difficult when applied to our lives. What if the truth is too much for us to bear? What if the truth ruins our reputation? What if the truth damages our closest relationships?
What Jesus is communicating to the Jews in today's Gospel is that not only is He the truth, the living truth, but that remaining and living in the truth will set them free from the life of sin they have allowed themselves to become slaves to. He's trying desperately to reach them and show them that what they have done to themselves, only He has the power to undo.
Upon hearing this, however, the Jews resist Christ, becoming defensive. Just like we would if someone asked us to consider changing our ways. How many times have we closed our hearts off to the truth to protect our sinful comforts? How many times have we pushed Christ away by enslaving ourselves to our sins and passions, when all He desires is to give us true freedom?
As we approach the end of Lent, let us ask ourselves: Do I live a life of truth? Do I remain in Him who is Truth itself?
Lord, teach us to remain in your truth and resist the temptations of Satan, the father of lies. Amen.
