Rejoicing in Hardship
"And all day long, both at the temple and in their homes, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Christ, Jesus." (Acts 5:42)
"And all day long, both at the temple and in their homes, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Christ, Jesus." (Acts 5:42)
Our reading today from Acts discusses a speech by the Pharisee Gamaliel. He states that the elders should ignore the Apostles because in the past false prophets had their movements die out. However, movements of God persevered and those who opposed God's Will were rebuked.
In our gospel, we see this idea in action though the popular story of Jesus feeding the 5000. As His mission was from God, those who wished to be part of it were not prohibited by material means. Rather, God gave an overabundance of food to those wishing to hear the Word. In this way, we too can be confident that our own mission from God will be blessed with more than we need.
Thus, it is important we make the distinction between what we want and what we need. Acts tells us the apostles were flogged for their efforts, but they responded by rejoicing in their suffering. We may face persecutions in our own mission from Christ. We may lose out on money, reputation, or friends. However, we are promised only what is necessary for the kingdom. Like the Apostles, we are called to rejoice in hardship, for Christ has chosen us to suffer with Him and to pray for the conversion of our enemies.
As Jesus proclaimed in Luke: to whom much is given, much will be required. What blessings and overabundance has God given us? How should these things be used for our Lord's glory? Let us remember that like the Apostles, we too are filled with the Holy Spirit. Let us rejoice in confidence that His blessings will not cease and our works will be used to build the kingdom of God.
What within our mindset needs to change when we encounter difficulties?
Lord, we ask that you help us to remain confident in You and trust that You will use us to build Your kingdom. Amen.
