Pursuing Other Things
“There will be those who will say to you, ‘Look, there he is,’ or ‘Look, here he is.’ Do not go off, do not run in pursuit.” (Luke 17:23)
“There will be those who will say to you, ‘Look, there he is,’ or ‘Look, here he is.’ Do not go off, do not run in pursuit.” (Luke 17:23)
I remember a few years ago, Fr. Chuck Dornquast said Mass at my church, and in his homily, he told us about a book that dealt with something that many of us struggle with – cell phone addiction. The scary fact that he shared was that we touch our phones thousands of times per day.
While today’s Gospel may be talking about the end times, it can also help us to see that we are so often focused on things that we shouldn’t be focused on. In fact, we pursue them.
Whether you’re talking about a cell phone, or the newest fancy TV, or that new fancy article of clothing that you must have, or that shiny apple in the Garden of Eden, we make gods out of all the things we’re not supposed to make gods of. The fact is, that cell phone is not God. That TV is not God. The fancy article of clothing is not God. That shiny apple is not God. Yet, how often do we pursue these things, instead of turning to Him?
How often do you run in pursuit for something that is not God, instead of running towards our Lord, especially in the Sacraments?
Heavenly Father, help us to change our addictions from those of the things of the earth, to You alone. Amen.
