Providing Proper Attention

“Yet the world and its enticement are passing away.” (1 John 2:17)

So much of the culture is vying for my attention. Especially at Christmas, the twinkling lights always catch my eye. But giving too much attention to whatever sparkles can leave me feeling empty. Just like eating a donut. It tastes great for a few minutes, but then I feel hungry soon after.

Today’s first reading reminds me to spend more time on the basics of my faith, things that fill my soul, such as reading Scripture, attending Mass, showing kindness, and praying.

We are called to not love the world or the things of the world but to love the will of God.

Have I spent enough time with Jesus reflecting on His will for my life?

Jesus, help me to love and follow your plan for my life and to not be distracted by the twinkling lights. Amen.
