I am writing this reflection from the eighth floor of Weill Cornell Hospital in NYC overlooking the East River while my husband is in ICU recovering from a Sepsis infection. I have been sleeping on a cot in his ICU room, this is day 18, plus a week at a community hospital before being transferred. My husband sleeping while I type.
Today's Gospel indicates how evil never sleeps. Herod beheaded our beloved John the Baptist and is still trying to see so as to act again to control the truth. There is a constancy of our foes pressing on. My husband's recent illness was like this surgery after surgery, nine total with one thing after another going wrong. My life turned upside down in a heartbeat by leaving Florida on an emergency flight to be with my husband.
Our Saving Grace is found in Our Eucharistic Lord. I have been blessed to be at 7:00 a.m. Mass daily a block away from the hospital, receive the Eucharist, place my tears and my hope in Jesus' love and His promise. Our Almighty Father has a divine plan for each of our lives. We are created in suffering to be formed in compassion. Herod could not understand this.
In the first reading we learn that all things pass away and our psalm reminds us that in every age God has been our refuge. Our faithfulness, our obedience to prayer, especially the Liturgy holds all that we need as we pass away day by day to what will be forever in the fullness of HEAVEN.
Do we think of our days being numbered so that we may gain Wisdom of heart?
Lord, help us to cling to the Eucharist knowing the power of Your love surpasses all that is passing away in this age. Amen.
