Open to the Light
"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12)

In today’s First Reading, we hear the story of two wicked judges, who ended up accusing an innocent woman and calling for her death. However, God intervened, and they were the ones who ended up dead. This tragic story begins when the judges see a beautiful woman and begin to lust for her. Scripture says, “They suppressed their consciences; they would not allow their eyes to look to heaven, and did not keep in mind just judgments.” (Daniel 13:8-9).
As human beings, we can recognize Truth when we hear it. Yet, also within us is the capacity to talk ourselves out of clarity and into complacency. Haven’t we all experienced that division within our own hearts, when our conscience tries to convict us, and our ego fights back? Who won the last time?
“Let us remember that vices belong only to individuals and that within each individual we also find the ennoblement of human nature, which, aided by the grace of Jesus Christ, can rise to the light of its original splendor.” (St. Peter Julian Eymard)
Jesus is the light of the world. In these last few days of our Lenten journey, let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us as we examine our consciences, and to give us the courage we need to humbly listen, open our eyes, and follow Jesus.
When was the last time I went to confession? Jesus is waiting with open arms.
Jesus, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Amen.
