Model of Humility

“Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.” (John 13:5)

The humility of Jesus is a very present theme on Holy Thursday. We see His humility in the washing of the disciples’ feet, in the Institution of the Eucharist, and in the beginning of His Passion. The Gospel we hear today invites us to reflect on the kind of Lord we have. Our Lord, King of kings, Lord of lords, got down on the ground and washed the feet of those whom He loved. Their feet were dirty and not presentable, but He wasn’t scandalized by that. He humbly got down to wash their feet.

The Lord is not scandalized by our mess, He loves us when we don’t feel as though we are ‘presentable,’ and He desires to constantly meet us right where we are at. As we enter into this Triduum, let us enter just as we are, trusting that the Lord is meeting us where we are at, and loving us right there.

Today, may we also have eyes to see and hearts to receive the beauty and the humility that is present in the Eucharist. Jesus, never wanting us to be without Him, gave us the gift of Himself totally present in the Eucharist. He did not leave us a symbol or a simple recounting of His presence, but rather, He continually gives us Himself totally and presently in the Eucharist. Let us not get used to this reality, rather, may we constantly be in awe that the Lord loves us so fully that He allows us to be united with Him so intimately in the Eucharist.

I pray that this Triduum and Easter season bless you abundantly.

What time can I set aside today to reflect on the humility of Jesus present in the foot washing, Institution of the Eucharist, and the agony in the Garden?

Oh, Good Jesus, thank You for being a model of humility. Please help me to give You permission to love me in my imperfection. Amen.
