Inward Sacrifices
“Jesus said to his disciples: 'Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.'” (Matthew 6:1)

It’s not possible to notice everyone in a crowd all at once. We live in a world where people are rewarded by others based upon what they notice, whether it’s by the questionnaire that was filled out by a customer, reviews our coworkers have for each other, or feedback from our managers. These people don’t know what’s going on inside us, what led us to our actions, or what our thought process was. What they judge us by is our outward appearance and how we carry ourselves.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who goes the extra mile to ensure something is done correctly at work or at home, but when my effort is overlooked it becomes frustrating. Apparently after 2,000 years it still rings true because even Jesus mentions for us to stop sharing our efforts with others and start acting with a subtlety that goes against our very nature. He asks for us to keep our suffering and repentance a secret, and in doing so, gain no immediate reward on Earth.
For a people who thrive on immediate gratification, it’s significantly challenging. I want the recognition for my sacrifice, to share what I’m giving up or adding for my Lenten sacrifice. But that’s not the point of the Lenten season. It’s a time for us to reflect inward and see what can we change about our hearts and minds that lead us closer to Him, as a singular person, in the silence of our hearts.
In what areas do I need change, and how am I to approach this Lenten season?
Holy Spirit, please guide me through my struggles and inspire me to do what needs to be done. Amen.
