On Friday, February 6, the Diocese of Saint Petersburg celebrated its first Hispanic Mass of Healing for Survivors of Abuse at Nativity Catholic Church, in Brandon.
More than 200 people from parishes throughout the area gathered to pray the Rosary and to participate in the Mass, seeking the Lord’s healing and comfort, and offering prayerful support by standing in solidarity with those who have suffered abuse. The strong attendance reflected a profound need for many to encounter the healing grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Father Felipe Gonzalez, pastor of St. Clement Parish, in Plant City, served as the main celebrant and was joined by four concelebrating priests, including Father Michael Smith, pastor of Nativity Parish. In his homily, Father Felipe reminded the faithful that “God does not remain distant in the face of pain but actively seeks us out to personally bind up our wounds.” Christ came to proclaim freedom and “liberate those who have been oppressed by the weight of secrecy.” He commended those who, despite carrying deep wounds, demonstrated great courage by being present to seek healing through the Sacraments. Emphasizing the transformative power of grace, Father Felipe encouraged all to allow the Lord to enter into our suffering, so that healing may take root and new life may bear fruit.
Following the Mass, attendees were offered the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to speak with counselors who were available in a supportive and compassionate setting.
In response to the strong attendance and evident pastoral need, another Diocesan Hispanic Healing Mass for Victims of Abuse is being planned for late Spring 2026. More information will be shared soon.
Please continue to keep the victims of abuse and their families in your prayers.
