Goodness and Joy

“The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.” (Psalm 126)

On the thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Church invites us to pray Psalm 126: “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.”

Here, the psalmist draws a clear connection to the good things that God has done for the people of Israel, and for each of us in particular, and joy, the deep abiding attitude of peace and confidence in the Lord’s goodness.

We see this joy in the Gospel in the healing of the blind man, where he “threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus…and followed him on the way” after this great healing that’s been given to him by Jesus (Mark 10).

In the context of the Mass, the readings remind us that, as disciples of Jesus Christ, we follow Him daily by the way in which we call to mind the good things that the Lord has done for us. And so in our worship and in our reception of the Eucharist, let us continually offer prayers and sacrifices of thanksgiving, knowing that there is joy in the Lord in all seasons of life.

What goodness and joy is the Lord inviting you to see in this season of life?

Lord, help us to see your goodness and allow us to be filled with your joy. Amen.
