God Looks Down on the Earth
“From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.” (Psalm 102:20)
“From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.” (Psalm 102:20)
You and I have been taught, hopefully by a parent, by sometimes by a teacher, that we should never look down on anybody. The Church most definitely teaches that every person has equal dignity in the eyes of God. Therefore, if God created us all equal, how can we look down on anyone and say we are following Him? In today’s responsorial Psalm we hear, “From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.”
Now, the fact that we know God to be a loving God and not like humanity, we can deduct that God is not looking down on us in a negative sense. That would be impossible. For God is all loving and teaches us to never look down on others. Therefore, when God looks down, it teaches us that he is doing so from somewhere above. It is like flying in a plane, whose window we look out of, and look down on the city.
Why does God look down though? What is the purpose of him looking at humanity? Well, God is like a parent, who looks after their children to make sure they are safe. If a parent turns their back for a second, trouble arises. The difference between God and our parents is that he never stops looking and paying attention to us. He watches us as we rejoice, as we mourn, during the good times, and during the bad times.
He always has a watchful eye on us at every moment of every day. What kind of God would care so much about us, to look down on the earth? In my opinion, only a loving God would do that. God’s love can be found in this simple Psalm, “From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.”
How does it feel to know that God is looking down on you? That he cares enough to watch over you?
God, we give you thanks for looking down on the earth, reminding us that we are dearly loved. Amen.
