Gift of Repentance
"Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers." (Luke 22: 31-32)

This Lenten Season I went to the movies with my family to see The Last Supper, a Christian film that Chris Tomlin (a Christian music artist that we play on Spirit FM) was an executive producer for. I expected to see another film adaptation of our Gospel accounts of the Passover and passion narrative… but was met with something greater.
This specific movie felt like imaginative prayer. The creators of the movie “filled in the gap” of events and conversations that may have happened in between the details of our Gospels. A great emphasis was placed on Simon Peter and his internal dialogue and struggle. This movie also drew a parallel between Simon Peter and Judas Iscariot: they both made some pretty big mistakes. They both separated themselves from Christ, to His face. They both had to face their consequences on the very night of the crucifixion. But one repented and returned, and the other let his sin take his life.
Not only did Simon Peter repent and return, but Christ used him to build His church. Our Lord prayed specifically for this flawed yet faithful man, who eventually became our first Pope and the first leader of our church. Simon Peter demonstrates to us that sinful behavior isn’t the end, but that Christ, through his crucifixion and resurrection, has purchased for us the reward of eternal life… we need only to return to Him with our whole hearts.
P.S. If Holy Spirit likes to speak to you through music, listen to “The Cross” by Anne Wilson and Chris Tomlin
Is the Lord calling you to repent this Holy Week? How can you prepare your heart to receive him at Easter?
Lord, as we enter today into Holy Week, let us learn to be faithful to you in all things. Do not let us be discouraged by sin, but allow us to be emboldened by the Holy Spirit to repent and proclaim the Gospel with our lives. Amen.
