An Expression of Gratitude

On Sunday, May 4, 2025, members of the Mater Dei Giving Society gathered at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church in Safety Harbor for “BBQ with the Bishop.”

This gratitude event began last year as a way for Bishop Gregory Parkes to recognize the generosity of giving society members. Featuring prayer, burgers and hot dogs, table and outdoor games, live music provided by Spirit FM 90.5, face painting, and more, attendees had the ability to experience fellowship with one another as well as diocesan leaders, parish staff, members of the Espiritu Santo Knights of Columbus, and our very own bishop.

“You have been very generous with your gifts of time, talent and treasure,” said Bishop Parkes following Midday Prayer, which kicked off the event. “It's an opportunity simply today to say thank you to each one of you for your support of our diocese, your support of me as your bishop, and of our mission and our ministries here in the Diocese of Saint Petersburg.”

Each member of the Mater Dei Giving Society contributes in an important and impactful way to diocesan ministry and outreach. When asked, many of these dedicated stewards cite the blessings they have received from God as the reason they give.

“The Lord gave to me generously and I need to give back,” shared Josephine Miranda, parishioner at Nativity Catholic Church in Brandon.

Andrew Balama, parishioner at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City Center echoed a similar sentiment. “We’re called to do unto others, and we’ve been very blessed in our lives. You get to the point where the best thing you can do is help others,” he explained. “It’s the here and the now and there’s great need; we’re just trying to respond to that.”

Michael Schell, parishioner at Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church in Tampa shared what motivates him and his wife to give. “The most important thing in the world is to help people and help souls get to heaven. Supporting the diocese is our way of doing that.”

One benefit of the casual barbecue setting is that it provides Bishop Parkes and the attendees the opportunity to visit with each other. It also allows them an opportunity for one on one time with Bishop as attendees line up to speak with him and even snap a photo.

Since 2020, Bishop Parkes has shared his appreciation for the giving society group at an annual prayer service scheduled near the end of the year. The barbecue was added last August.

The Mater Dei Giving Society has more than 6,000 members in four circles honoring distinct types of generosity. For more information about the giving society, visit www.dosp.org/materdei.
