Today I chose to reflect on the readings for the Memorial of Saint Lawrence Ruiz and companions, martyrs. I chose this mostly because it gave me another opportunity to pray for my Godson who is named Lorenzo, after this martyr. But as I reflected and prayed with the readings, I found depth in what a martyr is and I wish to share that with you today, so we may become martyrs in our everyday life.

Some characteristics of the martyrs are courageous, fearless, hopeful, and dependent on the Lord. When we read these words, it is so easy to say that we cannot live up to them. But the beauty of reflecting on the lives of the saints, is realizing that they were people like us, with trials and tribulations. They just chose to see those things as opportunities to grow in faith. It can be so hard to live up to those characteristics, but we have an opportunity to practice them. As life moves on, and you are faced with struggles, how are you being called to be courageous, fearless, hopeful, and dependent on the Lord? Take one step today. It can be as small as the carline, grocery store, at work, or with your family– let us choose to grow in faith!

How is the Lord calling me to be courageous, fearless, hopeful, and dependent on Him today?

Lord, teach me how to die to myself in order to rise with you every day. Amen.
