Don't Believe the Lie

"'Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist. Anyone who denies the Son does not have the Father, but whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.'” (1 John 2:22-23)

As the new year begins, today’s readings ask us this question: What is the significance of the child who is born? These readings prepare us for the conclusion of the Christmas season, when the Magi come to bring gifts and worship the baby Jesus. In the Gospel, the people ask John if he is the Christ.

He denies this and speaks of another, greater man. Like the star of Bethlehem, John points the way to Jesus for those in darkness.

However, in the first reading, the Apostle John reveals the answer: Jesus Christ is God, equal to the Father, who has come to give the Holy Spirit and eternal life.

At the start of the new year, many people prepare themselves with resolutions. This tradition is meaningful to many because it offers a way to start anew and work on goals or address flaws. As we decide what will hold significance in the coming year, let us keep in mind the message of the Gospel. The bright star and the disciples of Jesus have fulfilled their missions. Now, it is our turn to point others toward Christ through our words and actions.

This new year, what can we do to show others the significance of Christ? What is the Holy Spirit urging us to do this year? How can we show love to those waiting in darkness?

Lord, help us to show Christ to others and love to those waiting in darkness. Amen.
