Divine Assistance

"See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sin. My authority resides in him. If you heed his voice and carry out all I tell you, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes" (Exodus 23:20-22)

While this excerpt from today's second reading refers to a special martial angel sent to assist the Israelites, it also serves as a good explanation of the purpose of our own guardian angels. These angels have been recognized by saints throughout the ages, with perhaps the most famous being Padre Pio. Throughout his life, his guardian angel assisted him in many miraculous deeds, and he encouraged everyone to seek their guidance. He championed the faithful to ask their guardians for assistance in tasks, protection for those in danger, comfort and wisdom, and help in steering loved ones back to God.

These angels never tire or grow annoyed at helping us as that is part of their created purpose. In fact, they are filled with joy when we ask for assistance.
Today's feast allows us to reflect on the wondrous gift of a protector and guide that God has created to personally look after us. As the passage above states, God's authority rests in His angels, and where His authority resides, so too does the Holy Spirit.

How can I be more intentional with calling upon my guardian angel?

Lord, help us to heed the Holy Spirit's voice through our guardian angels and never grow weary in carrying out all that you tell us. Amen.
