Christ's Power

"For I too am a man subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one,'Go,' and he goes." (Matthew 8:9)

Today's Gospel recounts an impressive tale of a mighty centurion humbling himself before Jesus to request healing for his servant. This act alone is remarkable, as Roman soldiers at the time could force Jews to give free labor. Yet here, the centurion not only makes a humble petition, but also acknowledges Jesus' authority as superior to his own. He says, "For I too am a man subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes..." (Matthew 8:9).

Earthly authority, granted by Caesar, enables the centurion to command others by word alone. Similarly, divine authority, given by God, allows Jesus to do the same. The soldier's faith stands apart from others we read about, such as in the Gospel of John, where many believed Lazarus had died because Jesus was not present. The centurion, however, believed that Jesus was unconstrained by earthly limits and had full command over them.

Jesus is amazed and declares that no one in Israel has shown such faith. When Christ is born on Christmas day, will He be shocked at our lack of belief? Today, let us reflect on the times we doubt the power of God.

Why do we doubt His power? Is it because we are too prideful, believing we hold ultimate authority, or because we feel unworthy and afraid to seek Jesus' help?

O God, may we surrender all to You, like the centurion, and believe that Your authority is ultimate. Increase our faith and grant us the courage to live it boldly each day. Amen.
