Bigger Picture
"Look, I have given you power to tread down serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of the enemy; nothing shall ever hurt you. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice instead that your names are written in heaven." (Luke 10:19-20)

I have a detail-oriented way of thinking. I like to plan things out and be exact in how I approach my goals. But sometimes I have difficulty realizing the bigger picture, or what was truly important along the way.
The disciples were given an awesome power that granted them power over demons. As any person would do upon receiving such incredible abilities, they rejoiced in the power God had granted them. It would be like waking up and finding out I had become Spider-Man. Super powers? Power to combat the enemy? It would be awesome! But like an infomercial, Jesus said, “But wait, there’s more.” He says the power they received was great, but there was something more, something they had not seen.
The best part of what had transpired was not the power given to them, but that they were elected to join in the eternal life in heaven. The disciples thought the power given to them on Earth was the big picture and rejoiced in it. But Jesus knew the biggest picture of all, and that was the salvation for their, and our, souls.
What we see as being the most important objective in the moment may not align with what God knows is the most important objective for us in the future. We need to reflect that despite our own perceived self-awareness, education, knowledge, and wisdom, we must surrender in the fact that we may be blinded to the “bigger picture” God sees for us.
How can you surrender yourself (whether in your joy, sorrow, anger, or confusion) and allow God to lead you today?
Lord, grant us humility to offer ourselves to you and seek what is truly important. Amen.
