Becoming One
“So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man.” (Genesis 2: 21-22)
“So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man.” (Genesis 2: 21-22)
Adam had to give himself over to God before his desires were fulfilled. The Lord could have created Eve without putting Adam into a deep sleep and taking one of his ribs. So why would the Lord ask this of Adam?
I love teaching Theology of the Body to my students. We talk about how the sanctity of our bodies, especially within marriage, reveal the love of God.
It also reveals to us the type of relationship He craves to have with us. He craves deep intimacy, so much so that he asks us to receive Him in the Eucharist. Just like Adam and Eve became one, He desires to become one with us.
Adam had to give himself over for love like Jesus did for us. Our culture teaches us that marriages are about living happily ever after, but our faith teaches us differently. Marriage is a vocation that should sanctify us and teach us how to die to self in love for someone else. We do not live for our vocation, but rather live it out so that we can spend eternity with our first and greatest Love.
No matter what vocation God calls us to, let us remember that eternity with God is our deepest longing and no one can know, love, and see us better than our Creator Himself.
In what areas of my life am I not fully giving myself to the Lord?
Father, please teach us how to give ourselves more fully to You! Amen.
