Shaped through service: Being an altar server brings blessings
I have been an altar server at my church and at my school, Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, for years. When I first decided to take on this role, I was inspired by the desire to deepen my faith and contribute more actively to my parish and school communities. It's been a transformative journey, and I'm excited to share how serving at the altar has enriched my life.

Every Sunday, my responsibilities at Mass include preparing the altar, assisting the priest, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly during the liturgy. I carefully set out the chalice, paten, and other sacred items, and I’m always attentive to the priest's needs. One of the most meaningful tasks for me is carrying the processional cross during the entrance and recessional hymns. This simple act of walking down the aisle with the cross feels profoundly symbolic and connects me deeply to the history and tradition of our faith.
Being an altar server has significantly impacted my faith journey. There have been moments when the significance of the Mass became clearer to me, especially during quiet, reflective moments at the altar. For instance, there was a time when I was standing by the altar during the consecration and felt an overwhelming sense of reverence and connection to God. These experiences have fostered a deeper understanding of the liturgy and a more personal relationship with my faith.
Of course, the role is not without its challenges. Balancing my responsibilities as an altar server with my schoolwork and extracurricular activities can be demanding. There have been times when I’ve felt overwhelmed, especially during large Masses or special events. However, overcoming these challenges has taught me valuable lessons in time management and perseverance.
The rewards, though, are immense. The sense of community I’ve gained, the personal growth, and the strengthened connection with God are truly fulfilling.
For other young people who are considering becoming altar servers, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. Serving at the altar not only enhances your understanding of the Mass but also allows you to be an integral part of your church community. The joy and spiritual growth you experience are well worth the effort.
Being an altar server has been a profoundly meaningful part of my high school experience. It has shaped my faith, taught me valuable life lessons, and allowed me to serve my community in a special way. I am grateful for the opportunity to be an altar server and hope that my experiences inspire others to consider this rewarding role. Serving at the altar has not only deepened my connection with God but has also enriched my entire high school journey.

From January 26 to February 1, 2025, the diocese joins Catholic schools across the nation in the celebration of Catholic Schools Week. It’s celebrated with an array of activities and is a time to highlight the faith, service, and academics for which Catholic schools are widely known.
Due to recent changes in legislation, Florida state scholarships are available to all families and can be used at our Catholic schools.
