Serving God and Each Other

On Sunday, October 26, 2025, faithful Catholics from 70 parishes and missions in the Diocese of Saint Petersburg were honored for their extraordinary service and impact on the faith life of our communities.

Bishop Gregory Parkes presented individuals and couples with the St. Jude the Apostle Medal in recognition of their distinguished and outstanding service – often carried out in quiet, unseen ways.

“It is good for us as a church, and it is good for our parishes to recognize you for your ministry and for all you do to serve God's people in your individual parish communities. Because, by doing so, you give good example to others of what it means to serve and to fulfill our baptismal calling to serve God and to serve each other,” said Bishop Parkes during his homily at Evening Prayer that preceded the conferral of medals at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle. “So today, as we go forth, let us ask the Lord to show us how we can continue to serve. Whatever gifts God has given you, use them to build up the Body of Christ, and help one another to grow in faith until together we reflect the fullness of Christ's love.”

The St. Jude the Apostle Medal was commissioned for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg in 1999 at the request of Bishop Emeritus Robert Lynch, who retired in 2017. The medal acknowledges the great gift of the Church, its people, exemplified in individuals who in their generosity and love of their faith have greatly contributed to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their parishes.

Each year, pastors select the award recipients who gather at the Cathedral for a diocesan event to meet the bishop so that he may express his gratitude and present the award to them.

Award recipients have enhanced many areas of parish life, including Faith Formation, Liturgy, Youth Ministry, homeless outreach, sacred music, maintenance, and education.

“Once again, be assured as your bishop, of my gratitude for all that you have done and all that you continue to do to serve God and to serve His people for His glory,” concluded Bishop Parkes in his homily.
