For many talented Catholic high school students, financial barriers stand in the way of continuing their education at a Catholic university.
For many talented Catholic high school students, financial barriers stand in the way of continuing their education at a Catholic university.
As the oldest Catholic university in Florida, Saint Leo University is changing that with the launch of the Benedictine Society, a new leadership giving program designed to make a Saint Leo education accessible to the next generation of Catholic leaders.
Dr. Jim Burkee, president of Saint Leo University, announced the launch during the university’s March 7 Breakfast with the President alumni event, explaining that the Benedictine Society will help close the tuition gap for Catholic students. “Across the country, there are thousands of remarkable students graduating from Catholic high schools who have the talent, discipline, and values to thrive at Saint Leo, but don’t have the resources necessarily to afford a Saint Leo education,” he said.
Through multi-year leadership gifts, the Benedictine Society supports Saint Leo’s Catholic Benedictine Scholars Program, which provides four-year, tuition-free scholarships to high-achieving Catholic high school students with demonstrated financial need.
“It’s the difference between a young person wondering if college is possible and discovering that it is,” Burkee said. “And it’s an investment in an entire generation of young men and women who will carry Saint Leo’s values unto the world.”
In addition to covering tuition, the program supports academic success, spiritual formation, and leadership development.
“This is faith in action,” said Stephen Kubasek, vice president of university advancement. “Through this program, Benedictine Society members will have the opportunity to create lasting, generational impact, ensuring Catholic education remains accessible, Catholic leadership continues to grow, and Saint Leo’s mission of service thrives for decades to come.”
