Pray for the Protection of Unborn Children
With the legalization of abortion through the 1973 Supreme Court Case Roe v. Wade and the overturning of that legalization in 2022 with Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, it is now primarily up to state legislators to protect pre-born children.

Many state laws are still hostile toward mothers and their unborn children, meaning prayer and advocacy are still needed.
Each year on January 22, dioceses in the United States observe the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.” According to the USCCB, this is designated as “as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.”
The Catholic Church has always taught that human life has dignity and deserves respect and protection from the moment of conception to natural death. Each human life is a gift that is entrusted to us by God and deserves to be cared for and protected. The Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children is not only about the laws and court decisions, but conversion of heart so that these laws can change. This is why the Church calls for prayer.
This day of prayer also coincides with other related events. This year January 23 is the March for Life in Washington, DC. and the 9 Days for Life Novena overlaps from January 16 – 24.
There are many ways to participate in this special day of prayer:
- Go to Mass and offer the graces you receive and time you spend for the end to abortion and protection of the unborn.
- Fast from something and offer it for the end to abortion and protection of the unborn.
- Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
- Pray a pro-life prayer.
