One Body, Many Cultures

“I had never visited the Cathedral before, but when I saw it, I was transported to the Cathedral of the Virgen de Coromoto in Venezuela,” said César Gonzalez, a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace in New Port Richey, who processed in with the Venezuelan flag at the Diocesan Hispanic Mass.

The Diocesan Hispanic Mass is an annual event held at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, where various Hispanic communities from around the diocese gather to pray the rosary, witness the procession of flags, and attend Mass celebrated by Bishop Gregory Parkes.

“It is important to have a Diocesan Hispanic Mass because it provides an opportunity to gather as one diverse community to celebrate our Hispanic heritage. This way, we celebrate together the Eucharist, honor our Blessed Mother, and share our gifts and the beauty of our heritage,” members from the community stated.

Before the Mass began, the rosary was prayed, and 23 flags representing Latin American countries, including Spain and the United States, were processed in.

“I had the opportunity to carry the flag of my country, and I couldn’t contain my excitement,” said Gonzalez. “Tears came to my eyes. As I processed, I felt a sense of pride and joy that could hardly be contained in my chest.”

Although the original date of the Mass had to be rescheduled due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, over 500 people were in attendance.

This year, during the Mass, the faithful honored the Immaculate Conception, patroness of the United States. It was a morning filled with joy, meaningful encounters, and a strong sense of community.

“My favorite part about the Mass is the encountering—encountering people before, during, and after the Mass. Christ is the reason for the encounter,” said Alfredo Columbie Martinez, Associate Director of Pastoral Juvenil Hispana.
