New Bell Tower Marks Milestone at Prince of Peace

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

On Sunday, May 10, Prince of Peace Parish in Sun City Center celebrated a special Mass and the blessing of their new parish bell tower.

The blessing, which followed the 12:00 pm Mass, drew a large gathering of parishioners who came together to mark this meaningful milestone in the life of the parish.

Bishop Gregory Parkes served as the principal celebrant for the liturgy and offered reflections in his homily on the spiritual significance of bells and bell towers within the Catholic tradition. He emphasized that these structures are far more than architectural features; they are enduring symbols of faith.

“A bell tower is not merely an aesthetic structure, it is a symbol of faith,” Bishop Parkes said. “As the bells ring out, it is a call to prayer and a reminder of God’s presence in this beautiful community.”

Throughout the history of the Church, bells have played an important role in the life of Christian communities. From the early Middle Ages, church bells were used to mark the hours of prayer, call the faithful to Mass, and announce significant moments in the life of the Church. The sound of bells was often described as the “voice of the Church,” echoing across towns and villages as a reminder of God’s presence in daily life.

Bell towers, or campaniles, became prominent features of church architecture, especially in Europe, serving both practical and symbolic purposes. Practically, they housed the bells high above the ground so their sound could carry long distances. Symbolically, they pointed upward toward heaven, inviting the faithful to lift their hearts and minds to God.

The new bell tower at Prince of Peace Parish now joins this long and rich tradition, serving as a visible landmark and a spiritual invitation. As its bells ring out over Sun City Center, they will continue to call the faithful to prayer and serve as a lasting sign of faith for generations to come.
