Construction continues to move forward on Mater Dei Catholic School in Ruskin, marking a significant step for Catholic education in South Hillsborough County.
On Tuesday, March 25, 2026, supporters and donors gathered at the construction site for a wall tilt celebration, an exciting construction milestone when the progress on the school’s building structure becomes more visible.
The moment reflected years of planning and a growing need in the region. First announced by Bishop Gregory Parkes in 2025, Mater Dei Catholic School will serve families in one of the fastest-growing areas of the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. When it opens, the school will welcome students from preschool through eighth grade.
The name “Mater Dei,” meaning “Mother of God,” points to the school’s Catholic identity and its focus on forming students both academically and spiritually. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ and inspired by the school’s guiding motto, “To Jesus through Mary,” Mater Dei Catholic School is being established as a place where children will be known, loved, challenged, and encouraged to grow into the people God created them to be. Its approach to education reflects a deep partnership with families and a belief that each student is a unique gift from God with a special purpose and calling.
From the beginning, diocesan leaders have emphasized that Mater Dei is more than a building project. Mater Dei Catholic School will be committed to nurturing the heart, mind, and spirit of every child. It will offer a strong academic foundation in core subjects such as religion, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, while also providing enriching opportunities in music, visual arts, physical education, and world languages. Technology will be thoughtfully integrated into learning, so students are well prepared for the future.
In addition to its academic and spiritual vision, the school will offer family-centered support through resources such as before- and after-school childcare and Parent University, thereby strengthening the partnership between home and school.
Located at 1131 N. U.S. Highway 41 in Ruskin, Mater Dei Catholic School is part of the Catholic School System of the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. Construction began in June 2025, and the recent wall tilt marks visible progress toward completion. The school remains on track to open August of 2027.
As the building rises, excitement continues to build. Mater Dei Catholic School represents a hopeful sign for the future of Catholic education in the region.
"It has been incredible to see the progress in the school building,” said Chris Pastura, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. “What's more exciting to me is the knowledge that thousands of young people will walk these halls and be formed in our Catholic faith for many years to come. Our children are the future of the Church and our future is bright."
When the doors open, the school will stand as place where students can grow in faith and their relationship with Jesus, and where learning is joyful and children are prepared to flourish in life.
