Living With Spirit During Catholic Schools Week

The annual National Catholic Schools Week is dedicated to celebrating Catholic education around the country.

Spirit FM 90.5, a radio ministry of the Diocese of Saint Petersburg, participated in Catholic Schools Week by visiting various Catholic schools within the diocese January 26 through February 1, 2025.

Spirit FM’s activities began on Tuesday, January 28, as Fernando Prieto, host of The Way Home, visited St. Paul Catholic School in St. Petersburg. While there, he played music during the school’s Walk-a-Thon. Prieto didn’t come empty-handed. Teachers were provided with a stack of books and Spirit FM pencils to distribute to the students.

On Wednesday, January 29, The Spirit FM Morning Show’s Davis Watts and Maria Pendleton made a surprise visit to Ms. Jenny Nansel’s 7B class at St. Lawrence Catholic School in Tampa. The class frequently participates in the show’s “This or That?” segment by voting in each week’s poll, including the poll between Krispy Kreme’s original glazed donut versus their chocolate iced donut with creme filling. Davis and Maria brought the class donuts to thank them for their continued participation.

On Thursday, January 29, Spirit FM’s Deacon Mike Sweeney spent time with students at St. Stephen Catholic School in Riverview. While there, he spoke to the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes about his work as the radio station’s host of How We See It, a locally produced program highlighting remarkable individuals and organizations who make an impact within the community. Deacon Mike shared the process of booking guests, editing the program, and following the FCC’s broadcast requirements.

During the early hours of Friday, January 31, Spirit FM’s John Morris and Geovanny Hillis ventured to Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School in Lutz to provide music for the school’s annual Field Day. Excitement and energy filled the air as the school’s classes enthusiastically competed in races, basketball competitions, dodgeball, tug of war, and more. With the school’s Blue Team taking home the trophy, it was an exciting competition and a special day for all of the students involved.

Spirit FM 90.5 is proud to celebrate and support Catholic schools, teachers, and students within the diocese.
