Many gathered at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle for Midafternoon Prayer and to be recognized as members of the Mater Dei Giving Society on November 16, 2025.
“This is an opportunity for me as your bishop to personally say thank you to each and every one of you for your generosity and your commitment to supporting the mission, the works, and the ministries of our diocese,” said Bishop Gregory Parkes during his homily.
Bishop Parkes launched the Mater Dei Giving Society in 2020 to show appreciation for those who generously support the ministries within the diocese and the mission to Courageously Live the Gospel. “Mater Dei” is Latin for “Mother of God” and is a reminder for members that they follow the example of the Blessed Mother by supporting the Church and putting their faith into action.
“There are a lot of good things that are happening here in the Diocese of Saint Petersburg during this year of hope,” said Bishop Parkes.
“I would simply say that your generosity to our diocese also gives me hope, because it is through your support that we're able to support and perform the ministries and the outreaches that we are able to do for God's people here in this local Church.”
A second prayer service will take place December 14th in Hudson to provide a more convenient location for Mater Dei Giving Society members who live in our northern counties.
These annual prayer services are important ways that diocesan ministries and entities are able to recognize the support of members of the Mater Dei Giving Society. For those working in ministry, the charitable contributions received are what make their work possible.
“So once again, I say to you, thank you. Thank you so much for your support, for your love, for your prayers, and of course, be assured of my prayers for you and for your loved ones,” concluded Bishop Parkes.
The Mater Dei Giving Society has four circles that represent different levels of commitment:
- Mater Spei (Mother of Hope) Circle recognizes those who have established a legacy gift for a parish, a mission, or a diocesan entity in their estate.
- Mater Unitatis (Mother of Unity) Circle recognizes those who have given a significant gift in the past year to one of the Diocesan entities.
- Mater Ecclesia (Mother of the Church) Circle recognizes businesses and organizations that have given a significant gift in the past year to one of the Diocesan entities.
- Mater Caritatis (Mother of Charity) Circle recognizes those who have given 10 years in a row to one or more of the Diocesan entities.
