Giving Alms to Those in Need

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl is a Lenten program organized by CRS, the official relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
This program invites Catholics and other communities of faith in the United States to participate in the almsgiving pillar of Lent by donating through the CRS Rice Bowl, supporting the work of CRS in over 130 countries. Each Lent, Millions of Catholics in the United States contribute to CRS’ anti-poverty relief and development projects.
“The past year has been incredibly difficult for so many families around the world,” said Sean Callahan, CRS president and CEO. “We’re seeing more people go hungry just as the resources available to help them are being reduced. CRS Rice Bowl offers Catholics in the U.S. a meaningful way to respond and affirm that no one is forgotten.”
Donations to the CRS Rice Bowl not only impact those in countries around the world but also help support the growing need within the United States as costs continue to rise.
“Right now, families everywhere are feeling the strain of rising costs, no matter where they live. CRS Rice Bowl offers Catholics in the United States a tangible way to live out their Lenten almsgiving, transforming small, personal sacrifices, like skipping a weekly coffee, into a greater impact for families facing hunger,” said Callahan.
Of all donations collected, 75% supports CRS’ international humanitarian programs, while 25% is retained by the local diocese to aid in hunger, justice, and poverty alleviation efforts. The Diocese of Saint Petersburg offers small grants of up to $1,000.00 available for diocesan entities. Eligible diocesan entities may apply for these grants. Applications are due by February 12, 2026.
