Fellowship, Fun, and Gratitude

Outdoor games, burgers and hot dogs, live music provided by Spirit FM 90.5, face painting, popcorn, and icees may sound like a parish festival, but on Sunday, August 18th they were highlights of a new event called "BBQ with the Bishop."

More than 450 members of the Mater Dei Giving Society gathered with Bishop Parkes at the St. Paul Parish Family Center in Tampa to enjoy fellowship, fun, and expressions of gratitude provided by 60 diocesan ministry leaders, as well as members of the parish staff, Knights of Columbus, and youth ministry.

"I was almost hesitant to accept the invitation because I wasn't sure I would know anyone," said Rose Quartucci-Reid, member of St. Michael Parish in Clearwater. "But two lovely couples from St. Benedict in Crystal River had one seat left at their table and asked me to join. They made me feel so comfortable, it felt like I have known them for years!

It was so wonderful to spend time with not only our Bishop but other supporters of our diocese."

Since 2020, Bishop Parks has shared appreciation for this group at prayer services, a virtual ‘coffee talk,’ and through offering prayers over their intentions during Lent. This year, he and his ministry team were excited to add the family style barbecue. “Today is appreciation and gratitude focused,” said Bishop Parkes. “It has been such a blessing to spend this time with the people who make our larger ministries possible, as well as seeing the youth of this parish and the Knights actively serving, Courageously Living the Gospel.”

A benefit of this relaxed setting was that it provided Bishop Parkes and his guests the opportunity to visit, meet others who share their devotion to our church. “I try to help my church in any way I can which can be difficult sometimes,” shared Quartucci-Reid. “But over the years I have grown closer to God and my church. It is my foundation, and this event was a beautiful gesture to show how my sacrifice is appreciated.”

The Mater Dei Giving Society has more than 6,000 members in four circles honoring distinct types of generosity. For more information about the giving society, visit www.dosp.org/materdei.
