More than 45 deacons from across the Catholic Diocese of Saint Petersburg gathered on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle for the annual Mass of Recommitment, a meaningful tradition that highlights their vocation of service to the Church.
Representing the Diocese’s 74 parishes and five missions across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties, the deacons renewed their promises of service, obedience, and prayer during the liturgy. Nearly 30 of their wives were also present, offering their own recommitment of support for their husbands’ ministry.
A special highlight of the celebration was the recognition of two men marking 50 years of service: Deacon Richard Santello of St. Mary, Our Lady of Grace Parish in St. Petersburg, and Brother Alan Thomas, retired from St. Anthony Friary. Their decades of dedication stand as a powerful witness to faithful and enduring ministry.
The annual Mass offers the faithful a unique opportunity to witness a diocesan-wide gathering of ordained ministers and to support the deacons who serve their communities each day. Through their ministry of Word, Altar, and Charity, deacons assist at Mass, proclaim the Gospel, preach, and serve in sacramental and pastoral roles, including baptisms, marriages, and funerals.
Beyond the liturgy, deacons engage in charitable outreach, ministering to those in need in hospitals, prisons, and shelters, and providing pastoral care throughout their communities.
The Mass of Recommitment remains a visible sign of the deacons’ ongoing dedication to Christ and to the people they are called to serve, strengthening the spiritual life of the Diocese and inspiring all who attend.
