Witness at Work: Behind the Mission with Megan Brendum

Megan Brendum’s journey to the Catholic faith began through a quiet calling that grew stronger after becoming a mother.
Today, that journey continues to shape both her personal life and her work as Associate Comptroller for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg.
For more than two years, Megan has served at the Pastoral Center, bringing with her extensive experience in accounting and finance across a wide range of industries, including medical services, insurance, transportation, private equity, and retreat center administration. She holds a Master of Accountancy, a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting, and is both a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). Megan is currently working on a second Master’s in Church Management at Villanova University.
But for Megan, her work at the Diocese is about more than just numbers.
“I love the Church,” she shared. “The Catholic Church provides the answers to life’s most important questions. Every day I fall more in love with Jesus, scripture hits in more meaningful and quirky ways, and I am continually awe struck by the goodness of God.”
A parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pinellas Park, Megan says her faith continually motivates her to grow both professionally and spiritually. In moments of challenge, she leans more deeply into prayer and dependence on God.
“My work makes me realize my own limitations, which further increases my prayer life and reliance on God,” she explained. “I like to see and know that financial resources entrusted to the Diocese are used responsibly for the good of souls, and that related financial information is transparent and accurate.”
While her role involves financial stewardship, Megan emphasizes that the work of the Church is never done alone.
“Everything at the Pastoral Center is a highly collaborative effort in service of the Church,” she said. “Most employees specialize in a few areas, but I am experiencing the joys of seeing how it all fits together.”
Megan’s path to Catholicism was deeply personal. She and her husband, David, were both raised in loving but mostly irreligious households. After the birth of their daughter, Emily, Megan felt called to become Catholic and entered the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, now known as O.C.I.A. (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults). Their daughter was baptized as Megan entered the Church, marking the beginning of a new chapter for their family.
Since then, parish life has become central to her spiritual growth. Megan serves as the Chair of Sacred Heart’s Pastoral Council. She enjoys attending daily Mass whenever possible and participating in parish ministries and spiritual events. She also acknowledges the importance of balance and embracing her vocation as a wife and mother.
“Sometimes to live out my vocation as a wife and mother, I need to participate in fewer spiritual activities and volunteer less to have a well-ordered life,” she reflected. “To move forward, I have needed to let go and take unexpected paths.”
Outside of work and ministry, Megan appreciates simplicity and quiet. She describes herself as someone who values solitude and recharging at home with family.
“Sometimes my favorite thing to do is absolutely nothing,” she said with a smile.
Through her work, faith, and quiet witness, Megan exemplifies how to sustain the mission of the Church each day, often behind the scenes, but always with purpose rooted in Christ.
