Serving with Love This Lenten Season: Mother Teresa of Calcutta Families at Tampa Hope

During this sacred season of Lent, when the Church calls us to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, the families of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School lived out these pillars of faith through a meaningful act of service at Tampa Hope.

Students, parents, and volunteers gathered to continue the school’s tradition of serving our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness, putting the Gospel call to love and serve into action.

With generous support from Maschio’s Food Services, who provided and prepared the meal, our school was able to serve those experiencing homelessness with warmth, dignity, and joy. Because Maschio’s cooked the food, our volunteers were able to focus on welcoming each person, distributing meals, offering fruit and water, and sharing smiles and conversation that reflected Christ’s compassion.

For the students, this Lenten outreach was more than an act of service; it was a living lesson in faith. Standing beside their parents and teachers, they experienced how small sacrifices of time and comfort can become meaningful gifts for others. In serving those in need, they witnessed the true spirit of Lent: turning their hearts outward in love, humility, and mercy.

“Tampa Hope provides temporary shelter and support for individuals working toward stability and independence, and we are grateful to be part of their mission of hope,” said Veronica DeMicheli, Service Coordinator for Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School. Encounters like these remind us that almsgiving is not simply about giving things; it is about giving ourselves.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Maschio’s for their partnership and to our families who generously shared their time and hearts. As we journey through Lent, may we continue to follow the example of our patron saint, Saint Teresa of Calcutta, remembering her words:

“It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.”
