Morning Star School’s Special Olympics Basketball Program: A Growing Mission of Inclusion and Excellence

Morning Star School is celebrating the continued success of its Special Olympics basketball program—a mission rooted in faith, community, and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Launched during the 2023–2024 school year, the program's inaugural season featured eight students—six boys and two girls, ages 10 to 17—who participated in the Special Olympics basketball skills competition. With the dedicated guidance of coaches Jay Vanderbeck and Tim Barber, each athlete earned top placements in regional competition. A standout moment came when student Terry D. was selected to compete in the State Games, where he brought home 1st place in his division.

Both Vanderbeck and Barber are parishioners of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and active members of the Knights of Columbus. Their commitment to mentoring students reflects the values of Catholic education and the mission of the Knights: charity, unity, and fraternity.

Now in its second year, the program has grown to include 20 student-athletes ranging in age from 8 to 20. In addition to individual skills training, Morning Star now proudly fields two 3v3 basketball teams—the Mustangs and the Stallions. Both teams went undefeated in regional competition and will advance to the State Games, scheduled for May 16–17 at ESPN's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida. In addition to the team entries, one student will also represent Morning Star School in the individual basketball skills competition at the state level.

The school credits the success and expansion of the program to the unwavering support of its families, staff, and donors. Through their generosity and dedication, students of all abilities are being given the opportunity to grow, compete, and shine.
