With more than 500 people present at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, the morning was filled with celebration, joy, and worship. On Saturday, October 11, communities from around the diocese gathered for the Annual Diocesan Hispanic Mass.
Before the Mass began, the Rosary was prayed, and 23 flags representing Latin American countries, including Spain and the United States, were processed in.
During the Mass, Our Lady of the Rosary, patroness of Guatemala, was honored.
“This Mass is a joyful celebration rich in devotion and diversity,” said Ana Jahuey, Administrative Assistant for Intercultural Ministries.
She added, “Events like the Hispanic Mass are important because they provide an opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate our faith. We come together and share our gifts with our brothers and sisters in Christ. It is also a way to celebrate our Hispanic/Latino heritage and our devotion to the Blessed Mother.”
After the Mass, all gathered in the parish hall to participate in a Cultural Encounter.
“This is the first year we have held a Cultural Encounter. Our goal was to highlight the richness of music and dance from our heritage,” said Jahuey. “A group of ladies from Incarnation Catholic Church opened the show with a seis, bomba y plena dance from Puerto Rico, and Coral Wattaka from St. Mark Catholic Church delighted us with their amazing voices and instruments. They sang and played iconic songs from various countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Craulio de la Cruz from Nativity Catholic Church served as our Master of Ceremonies and helped keep a joyful atmosphere throughout the Cultural Encounter.”
This Mass was made possible thanks to the collaboration and dedication of the Hispanic Commission, the Hispanic Assembly, diocesan offices, and all those who generously gave their time and talent.
Bishop Gregory Parkes expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am grateful to those who have given so much of their time to make this a beautiful celebration today.”
