Helping Priests Stay Healthy

Megan Mehaffey, RN, is overjoyed to serve as the Diocese of St. Petersburg’s first Priest Wellness Coordinator. She started February 12, 2024, in this new role that was created by Bishop Gregory Parkes to ensure all priests have access to personalized, holistic healthcare.

“I didn't know a position like this existed! I love the idea of uniting my career and my spirituality in a way I didn't know was possible,” said Mehaffey, a registered nurse.

As the Priest Wellness Coordinator, she connects priests with health resources, assists with scheduling medical appointments, accompanies priests on doctor visits, answers health questions, and more.

She is regularly visiting parishes around the Diocese to introduce herself and to provide initial resources. She enjoys getting to know the wonderful priests in our Diocese and is grateful for the warm welcome she has received.

“The priests I have met have been so kind and welcoming. The positivity and hospitality in the Diocese of St. Petersburg have been so refreshing,” she added.

Mehaffey grew up near New Orleans in a loving Catholic family. Having been surrounded by joyful people who had a relationship with Christ, she followed their example and developed a personal relationship with Him as well– something that flows into all aspects of her life, including her career. Nursing was something she was drawn to in high school and it seemed to be the perfect fit for her.

“I like that nursing combines all the passions I have--helping others, teamwork, science, and critical thinking,” said Mehaffey.

After graduating from nursing school, she worked on a post-surgical oncology floor in a Head and Neck Unit, and then as a travel nurse in New York, Arkansas, North Carolina, Indiana, Texas, South Carolina, Florida, and Colorado. She learned about the Priest Wellness Coordinator position from a close friend.

“My best friend had been working tirelessly to get me to move back to Florida, and she saw the job posting first. She was very enthusiastic in her support,” explained Mehaffey.

The Priest Wellness Ministry is supported through the Catholic Ministry Appeal. Ensuring both our active and retired priests maintain good health and are medically cared for allows them to focus their hearts and energies to ministering to the people of God.
