Postponed: Jubilee Year Opening Mass

Between Christmas Eve and January 5, the Pope will open a series of holy doors in the Vatican and throughout Rome, signifying the start of a Jubilee year.

Pope Francis proclaimed 2025 a Jubilee Year centered on the theme, “Pilgrims of Hope.” In line with ancient tradition, the Catholic Church proclaims a Jubilee every 25 years to increase opportunities to experience God’s grace. It is a year of forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope that is celebrated throughout the Church. It is also a time for the faithful to embark on their own pilgrimage.

Unfortunately, the Jubilee Year Opening Mass originally scheduled for January 5, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle has been postponed because Bishop Parkes is feeling under the weather with cold symptoms.  Please pray that our bishop will feel better soon! We will notify you when a new date has been scheduled.

Those unable attend in person can pray along via livestream at www.dosp.org/livestream, Facebook.com/DioStPete, or YouTube.com/DioceseofStPete. The Mass will also be broadcast live on Spirit FM 90.5.

Catholics will be able to receive what is known as a plenary indulgence, or the cleansing of the soul as if the person has just been baptized, for participation in the Opening Mass of the Jubilee Year.

The Diocese of Saint Petersburg will offer invitations for all Catholics to take part in additional Jubilee Year activities, pilgrimages, and events that will be held throughout the year. The Jubilee year formally concludes in Rome on January 6, 2026, the Day of the Epiphany.
