In a joyful celebration, Bishop Gregory Parkes along with 1,000 collective priests, deacons, seminarians, and parishioners from around the diocese, packed the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle on April 15, 2025, for the Chrism Mass.
During the Mass, Bishop Parkes consecrated Sacred Chrism, a mixture of oil and balsam, that will be used for anointing during thousands of Baptisms and Confirmations throughout the coming year in all 80 parishes and missions of our diocese. He also blessed the Oil of Catechumens that is reserved for adults preparing to be baptized and the Oil of the Sick that is reserved for those who are seriously ill. After Mass, representatives from each parish and mission received small vessels of these Holy Oils to bring back for use in the sacraments.
“The oils we bless today are not just symbolic– they are sacramental channels of God’s grace,” said Bishop Parkes in his homily. “Through these oils, the Lord continues to reach into the lives of His people with healing, strength, and consecration.”
All local priests are encouraged to participate in the Chrism Mass each year. This year, the 185 priests who attended had the opportunity to renew their priestly promises which they originally made on the day of their ordination. This renewal of promises is a beautiful expression of their resolve to unite themselves more closely to Christ as they serve.
“To my brother priests, today we renew our promises. We renew our commitment to live our lives in Imitation of Christ, the Good Shepherd,” Bishop Parkes said as he addressed the priests present.
“We are not only called to administer the sacraments, but to embody the mercy of God in the year of hope. The faithful look to us for signs of God’s presence, God’s faithfulness and God’s love,” Bishop Parkes continued. “The same Sacred Chrism that will bless and sanctify others was placed on our hands on the day of our ordination. We carry the fragrance of Christ into a wounded world, and the world desperately needs shepherds who will lead their sheep with tenderness, conviction, and joy.”
The Chrism Mass also offers an opportunity to publicly celebrate our jubilarian priests. As per our diocesan tradition, all 26 jubilarian priests were recognized by name as well, noting their milestone anniversaries of 25, 40, 50, 60, or 65 years of priestly service. After acknowledging these priests, Bishop Parkes requested the congregation join him in expressing gratitude for all priests present, the cathedral then being filled with applause and a standing ovation.
