Bishops Urge Novena for Florida's 15-Week Abortion Ban

August 28, 2023 | Join us to pray for the protection of human life!

On September 8, 2023, the Florida Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case brought by several pro-abortion groups challenging the constitutionality of Florida's 15-week abortion ban. A restriction on abortions after 15-weeks gestation was passed by the Florida legislature and signed into law by Governor DeSantis in April 2022.

In 1989, in In re T.W., the right to privacy in Florida’s constitution was utilized by previous justices of the Florida Supreme Court to expand a woman’s right to obtain an abortion. This new case, Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, et al. v. State of Florida, prompts the court to revisit that decision. We are hopeful that the current court will determine that the privacy clause in our state constitution does not prohibit the legislature from restricting abortion procedures before viability.

Furthermore, depending on the ruling by the court, a six-week ban on abortion passed by the legislature and signed by the governor during the 2023 session may go into effect 30 days later.

Join us to pray the following from August 31 - September 8:

Lord, we entrust our state to you and commend to you the seven Supreme Court Justices of Florida. Please grant them clarity, wisdom and courage as they hear arguments in this landmark case challenging Florida’s 15-week abortion ban. May they judge according to truth and right reason to usher in a new era of greater protection for the unborn. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we ask that the sacredness of every human life be promoted and protected both in our laws and in our culture. Amen.
