Bishop Gregory Parkes Sends $100,000 Donation for Maui Wildfire Relief

August 21, 2023 | The tragic wildfires on the island of Maui, Hawaii have left the town of Lahaina, located in the Diocese of Honolulu, mostly devastated. To assist victims, Bishop Gregory Parkes sent a donation of $100,000 to the Diocese of Honolulu on August 18, 2023. This gift was made possible from donors to the Diocese of St. Petersburg Disaster Relief Fund.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the devastating wildfires that ravaged the island of Maui earlier this month. My prayers and those of the people of God in the Diocese of St. Petersburg are with you during this overwhelming time within your diocese,” wrote Bishop Parkes in the letter accompanying the donation.

More than 100 people have lost their lives due to the fires, and over 11,000 people were evacuated from Lahaina alone. The fires affected other communities further inland as well.

In his message on the Maui wildfires, Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu said:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the island of Maui. As a community of faith, we are called to come together and provide unwavering support to those who are suffering. It is in times like these that our collective love, faith, and compassion can make a tremendous difference.”
