Saint Leo University is celebrating a major boost in student success, thanks to the generosity of alumnus Jody “Allan Joseph” Luihn ’83 and the Taco Bell Foundation, Inc.
Their support has been instrumental in providing direct aid to at-risk first time-in-college freshmen through the university’s Retention Task Force.
Through the Access to Excellence Fund, more than $50,000 in one-time scholarships is distributed annually, including Taco Bell Foundation contributions that also support student success in areas of financial literacy, advising, and career readiness. While the Retention Task Force serves students across multiple groups, the Taco Bell Foundation grant was directed specifically to at-risk freshmen on campus—the students most vulnerable to leaving before completing their first year. In the 2024–2025 academic year alone, 43 at-risk freshmen received critical support to stay enrolled. This year, the program expects to reach more than 130 students facing similar challenges.
“These scholarships are about more than financial support—they show students their community believes in them and their future,” said Luihn, president and CEO of Luihn VantEdge Partners.
The impact is unmistakable: Saint Leo’s retention rate jumped 7 percentage points in one year, from 59% to 66%—outpacing the national average for private nonprofit universities.
The funds provided by Taco Bell Foundation’s Community Grants program will supports several student success initiatives at Saint Leo, including:
Autism Connect – a program designed to support students on the Autism Spectrum with tailored resources for academic and social success.
LEAP (Lions Enrichment and Achievement Program) – allows at-risk first-year students to arrive on campus early, take a course before the semester begins, and acclimate to college life at no cost.
Internship Ambassadors – a peer support initiative that helps students prepare for, secure, and succeed in internships.
Additional student support programming – including financial literacy workshops, advising, and career readiness opportunities to help students stay on track academically and professionally.
“This partnership directly impacts our most vulnerable students, providing the confidence and resources they need to succeed,” said Stephen Kubasek, vice president of University Advancement.
As a member of the Board of Trustees, Luihn’s continued involvement reflects the powerful role alumni play in advancing Saint Leo’s mission. By investing in student success and strengthening retention, his support ensures that future generations of Saint Leo students have the resources, encouragement, and opportunities to achieve their goals.
