At the annual Chrism Mass on Tuesday, April 15th, Bishop Parkes will consecrate Sacred Chrism, a mixture of oil and balsam, that will be used for anointing during thousands of Baptisms and Confirmations throughout the coming year in local parishes.
The bishop will also bless the Oil of Catechumens that is reserved for adults preparing to be baptized and the Oil of the Sick, that is reserved for those who are seriously ill.
After the Mass, leaders from local parishes and missions receive vessels of these Holy Oils to take back to their places of worship.
During the Chrism Mass, priests renew the promises made on their ordinations and resolve to unite themselves closer to Christ. The presence of the majority of the clergy in union with their bishop, along with the participation of the laity, is a wonderful example of unity in our Diocese. This is one of only a few Masses of the year where all the priests of the Diocese are encouraged to participate in union with the bishop. The assembly also honors priests celebrating milestone anniversaries of their ordination.

25th Anniversary
Rev. Michael Cormier
Father Cormier was born in Leominster, Massachusetts. He completed seminary studies at St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami (1992-1995) and St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach, after which he was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg by Bishop Robert Lynch on May 13, 2000. His assignments include service as Parochial Vicar of St. Paul Parish, St. Petersburg (2000-2005) and St. Cecelia Parish, Clearwater (2005-2007). In 2007, he was appointed Pastor of St James the Apostle Parish, Port Richey, where he served for 12 years, while also providing pastoral care to the students at nearby Bishop Larkin Catholic School. Since 2019, Father Cormier has led the community of Incarnation Parish and School, Tampa.
Very Rev. Dermot J. Dunne, VF
County Wexford, Ireland is the birthplace of Father Dunne, who came to the U.S. in the 1990s and graduated in 2000 from Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, in St. Louis. He was ordained on June 3, 2000 for the Archdiocese of Omaha, Nebraska, where he served in three parishes before coming to the Diocese of Saint Petersburg in July 2010. He was first assigned as Parochial Vicar of St. John Vianney Parish, St. Pete Beach (2010-2012), and then as Parochial Administrator of St. Cecelia Parish, Clearwater. Upon incardination into our Diocese in April 2013, Father Dunne was named Pastor of St. Cecelia Parish and School. In 2017, he was appointed by Bishop Gregory Parkes as Pastor of St. Stephen Parish, Riverview, where he continues to serve, along with his duties as Vicar Forane (Dean) of the Hillsborough Deanery and as temporary Administrator of San Juan Diego Mission, in Dover.
Very Rev. Sojan Punakkattu, VF
A native of Santhinagar, Kerala, India, “Father Sojan,” as he is known, joined the Apostolic Life Community of Priests in the Opus Spiritus Sancti (ALCP) and was ordained for the community on May 3, 2000 in India. After serving in parish ministry and as Rector of his community’s formation house, Father Sojan desired to engage in mission work outside India. His superior permitted him to come to the Diocese of Saint Petersburg, where he held assignments as Parochial Vicar of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, New Port Richey (2003-2009); St. Timothy Parish, Lutz (2009-2012); and St. Raphael, St. Petersburg (2012-2014). He was incardinated into our Diocese in December 2010. Since July 2014, Father Sojan has held the office of Pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Citrus Springs. In 2022, he was also appointed as Vicar Forane of the Citrus Deanery.
Rev. Michael R. Smith

Growing up in a military family, Father Smith was born in Colorado and eventually followed in his father’s footsteps, enlisting in the Air Force, serving in Colorado, Korea, and South Dakota. Although baptized in the Baptist tradition, Father Smith became intrigued by the Catholic faith while in military service and was received into the Catholic Church in 1989. Soon after, he discerned the possibility of a calling to the priesthood. After moving to Florida, he received an A.A. degree in Liberal Arts from Hillsborough Community College (1993) and was received as a seminarian for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg, completing studies at St. John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, and St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach. Along with Father Mike Cormier, he was ordained to the priesthood for our Diocese on May 13, 2000, after which he was assigned as Parochial Vicar of St. Raphael Parish, St. Petersburg (2000-2004), and St. Stephen Parish, Riverview (2004-2006). He has also served as Pastor of St. Scholastica Parish and St. John Paul II Catholic School, Lecanto (2006-2013); Director of the Catholic Student Center at USF, Tampa (2013-2018); and Pastor of Corpus Christi Parish, Temple Terrace (2015-2022). Since 2022, Father Smith has served as Pastor of Nativity Parish, in Brandon.
Rev. David Steinwachs, OSB
A native of Buffalo, New York, Father Steinwachs was the eldest of five children born to Arthur Clayton and Ruth (Betz) Steinwachs. A product of Catholic schools, he attended Our Lady of Hope Junior College (minor seminary) and later entered the novitiate as an Oblate of Mary Immaculate. He attended the Oblate College from 1968 through 1974 where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. In 1989, Father Steinwachs joined the Benedictine Community at Saint Leo Abbey, taking the name of “Boniface,” after St. Boniface, a Benedictine missionary sent to evangelize Germany. Father Steinwachs professed his first vows November 1990, with his Solemn Profession of vows in November 1993. In August 1998, he entered St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach, and was ordained for the Order of Saint Benedict by Bishop Robert Lynch on June 5, 2000.
40th Anniversary
Rev. Ariel L. Arias
A native of Cali, Colombia, Father Arias was ordained for the Diocese of Reno, Nevada on November 23, 1985. Upon retirement, he moved to the Diocese of Saint Petersburg in early 2023 and currently resides in Spring Hill. He provides ministry in both English and Spanish to local parishes, as needed.
Rev. Kenneth A. Breen, O de M
Father Breen was born in Redbank, New Jersey and attended schools near Cleveland, Ohio, where he was ordained for the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (Mercedarians) on November 16, 1985. Five months after his ordination, he was assigned to the St. Peter Nolasco Residence, in St. Petersburg, while serving in Prison Ministry for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. He was reassigned to Cleveland in 1991, but returned to St. Petersburg, as Parochial Vicar of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, from 2010 to 2012, when he was selected by his superior as Vicar for the U.S. Vicariate of the Mercedarian order. He returned to our Diocese, assisting parishes as needed from 2015 to 2018 and was then transferred to LeRoy, New York. In September 2023, Father Breen returned once again to St. Petersburg, this time as Local Superior of the Mercedarian Fathers living at St. Peter Nolasco Residence.
Rev. Theodore Costello
Father Costello, or “Father Ted,” as he is commonly known, was born in Huntington, West Virginia. During his childhood, his family relocated to Florida, where he attended Nativity Catholic School, Brandon, and Tampa Catholic High School, from where he graduated in 1974. Father Costello received a B.A. degree in Philosophy from the University of Tampa in 1976 and was accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. He earned an M.Div. degree from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary and was ordained for our Diocese by Bishop W. Thomas Larkin on May 18, 1985.
Over his 40 years of priestly ministry, Father Costello served as Parochial Vicar of the following parishes: Light of Christ, Clearwater (1985-1992); Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, St. Petersburg (1992-1996); St. Luke, Palm Harbor (1996-1997); and for the past 28 years, St. Michael the Archangel, Clearwater. In addition, Father Costello has served as Chaplain for the Clearwater Police Department, earning recognition as “Volunteer of the Year” in 2021. He has also served for over ten years as Spiritual Advisor to the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.
Rev. Richard L. Crager, SDB
Father Crager was born in Parsons, Kansas and was ordained in Columbus, Ohio for the Salesians of Don Bosco on May 18, 1985. Prior to his transfer to the Diocese of Saint Petersburg, he served in the Archdiocese of New York. He served at Mary Help of Christians Center, Tampa, from 2013 to 2017 and was reassigned to New York, where he remained until 2021, when he returned to residence at Mary Help of Christians Center, along with his fellow Salesian Fathers and Brothers.
Rev. Richard Erikson, Ph.D., USAF Ret.

A native of Watertown, Massachusetts and former Vicar General, pastor, and retired Air Force Chaplain, Father Erikson relocated full-time to Clearwater in early 2022. He provides assistance to local parishes, as requested. Father Erikson was ordained for the Archdiocese of Boston on June 8, 1985, after which he served in parishes of the Archdiocese as Parochial Vicar and later as Pastor. He earned three Master’s degrees and a Doctorate in Sociology from the University of Southern California and was Chair of the Social Sciences Department and professor of Sociology at St. John’s Seminary, in Brighton, Massachusetts. For 35 years, he served in the Air Force Chaplain Corps as a reservist and on active duty, retiring in 2017, with the rank of Brigadier General. His military service also includes ten years in the Pentagon. Father Erikson is an avid music lover and a published author of the book, Late Have I Loved Thee: Stories of Religious Conversion and Commitment in Later Life (Paulist Press, 1995).
Rev. Gerald A. Hendry
Father Hendry was born in Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire, Scotland and graduated from high school in Glasgow. Eight years later, he began studies in Philosophy and Theology in Ireland, graduating in 1985. He was ordained for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg by Bishop W. Thomas Larkin on April 27, 1985. He was assigned as Parochial Vicar of the following parishes: St. Cecelia, Clearwater (1985-1988); St. John Vianney, St. Pete Beach (1988-1990); St. Patrick, Largo (1990-1993); St. Raphael, St. Petersburg (1993-1996); Most Holy Name of Jesus, Gulfport (1996-1997) and Holy Cross, St. Petersburg (1997-2000). For 12 years, he taught college courses in Ohio, returning to our Diocese in 2012 and serving in residence at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Clearwater. After assignments as Parochial Vicar and temporary Parochial Administrator of Nativity Parish, Brandon (2013-2014), Father Hendry provided ministry as Chaplain of Clearwater Central Catholic and Tampa Catholic High Schools (2014-2015). Since July 2015, he has served as Pastor of St. Justin, Martyr Parish, Seminole, providing ministry in English, Spanish, and Latin. He has also received bi-ritual faculties, occasionally providing sacramental ministry to Saints Peter and Paul Maronite Parish, Tampa.
Rev. Michael E. Perry, O de M
Father Perry was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He worked as a production foreman for a seafood company prior to discerning the religious life and priesthood. He earned his M.Div. degree from St. Charles Seminary, in Philadelphia, and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop A. Edward Pevec, of Cleveland on June 1, 1985, for the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (Mercedarians). Early assignments included parish ministry and hospital chaplaincy work, after which he was appointed Superior and Director of Students at the Monastery of Our Lady of Mercy, in Philadelphia. In 1991, he came to St. Petersburg, where he was assigned to St. Peter Nolasco Residence for six years while serving as Parochial Vicar of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle and as Director of Prison Ministry for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. This was followed by assignments in Cleveland and LeRoy, New York. Father Perry returned to our Diocese in 2000 and was again assigned as Parochial Vicar of the Cathedral Parish from 2001 to 2005 and as Parochial Vicar of Transfiguration Parish, St. Petersburg, from 2005 to 2006, after which he provided ministry at the former Bon Secours assisted living facility. He continues to reside with the local Mercedarian community at St. Peter Nolasco Residence.
Rev. Patrick Rebel
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Father Rebel grew up in Seffner, attending Nativity Parish, in Brandon. He graduated from Brandon High School in 1973 and earned a B.A. degree in Social and Behavioral Science from the University of South Florida in 1977. After discerning a call to the priesthood, he was accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg and studied at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, earning an M.Div. degree. Along with Father Ted Costello, Father Rebel was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop W. Thomas Larkin on May 18, 1985. Throughout his forty years of priestly ministry, he served as Parochial Vicar of the following parishes: St. Raphael (1985-1987), Corpus Christi (1987-1991), St. Catherine of Siena (1991-1994), St. Joan of Arc (1994-1996), St. Thomas Aquinas (1996-1997), and Most Holy Name of Jesus (1997-2000). He has also served as Pastor of Sacred Heart, Dade City (2000-2005), and St. Matthew, Largo (2005-2014). Since 2014, Father Rebel has faithfully shepherded the parish community of St. Joan of Arc, Spring Hill and has provided a stable presence to the incarcerated population at the Hernando County Detention Center.
Rev. Steve Shafran, SDB
Father Shafran came to our Diocese in December 2024 and was assigned by his Provincial Superior to the staff of Mary Help of Christians Center, in Tampa. Prior to his arrival in Tampa, he served as a staff member of the Marian Shrine and Don Bosco Retreat Center, in Stony Point, New York. He was ordained for the Salesians of Don Bosco on May 5, 1985. In addition to his work at Mary Help of Christians Center, Father Shafran provides ministry in both English and Spanish to parishes and missions in the Tampa and east Hillsborough County area.
50th Anniversary
Rev. Thomas L. Gwozdz, SDB
In 2018, Father Gwozdz was assigned to the St. Philip the Apostle Residence at Mary Help of Christians Center, in Tampa, following his service at Archbishop Shaw High School, in Marrero, Louisiana. He made his profession with the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1964 and was ordained for the Salesians in Rome by Pope Paul VI on June 29, 1975. He possesses a Ph.D. from Fordham University and is Professor Emeritus of St. Joseph Seminary College, in Louisiana.
Rev. John P. Hogan, OFM
Originally from Binghamton, New York, Father Hogan professed final vows with the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor in 1972 and was ordained to the priesthood for the Franciscans on January 25, 1975. Since 2017, he has resided at St. Anthony Friary, in St. Petersburg. During his 50 years of priestly ministry, Father Hogan’s assignments include retreat ministry at St. Francis Retreat Center, in Rye Beach, New Hampshire (1985-1994), and Parochial Vicar of St. Anthony Shrine, in Boston (1994-2001 and 2006-2017), and St. Francis Chapel (2001-2006). From 2013 to 2017, he also served as Guardian (Local Superior) for the Franciscan community in Boston.
Rev. Msgr. Dennis E. Hughes
A Florida native, Monsignor Hughes was baptized at Sacred Heart Church, in Tampa and graduated from Bishop Barry High School (now St. Petersburg Catholic High School), in 1967. After receiving his B.A. degree in Philosophy from St. Vincent de Paul Seminary, Boynton Beach, he completed his seminary formation in 1975, at St. Meinrad Seminary, in Indiana, earning a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Saint Petersburg by Bishop Charles B. McLaughlin on May 10, 1975. During his 44 years of active ministry, Monsignor Hughes served as Parochial Vicar of the following parishes: St. Raphael, St. Petersburg (1975-1977); St. Mary Our Lady of Grace, St. Petersburg (1977-1978, 1979-1981); St. John Vianney, St. Pete Beach (1978-1979); and Blessed Trinity, St. Petersburg (1981-1982). He also assisted temporarily as Director of Vocations for the Diocese (1978), Vice-Chancellor (1979), and was later appointed Dean of Students at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach (1982-1984). Upon returning to the Diocese, he was temporarily assigned as Parochial Administrator of Corpus Christi Parish, Temple Terrace and later to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, Spring Hill, both in 1984.
The following year, Monsignor Hughes was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Paul Parish, Tampa, while being charged with establishing a mission in the Northdale area of Tampa, later St. Timothy Parish, where he served as founding Pastor until 1996, following by appointments as Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish, San Antonio (1996-2000), St. James the Apostle Parish, Port Richey (2000-2006), and as founding Pastor of St. Peter the Apostle Parish, Trinity, from 2007 until his retirement in 2019. In 2016, upon nomination by Bishop Robert Lynch, the ecclesiastical title of “Chaplain to His Holiness” was bestowed upon Monsignor Hughes by Pope Francis. In 2020, Monsignor Hughes received the Fr. Luis de Cancer Distinguished Priestly Service Award.
Rev. Augustine J. Mailadiyil
Father Mailadiyil was born in Pannimattam, Kerala, India and was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Imphal, India on February 3, 1975. His experiences include parish ministry and serving as Principal in three schools. For three years, he was the Financial Administrator for his archdiocese and was later sent for continuing studies in Dublin, Ireland. In 1998, he came to the U.S., serving in two parishes in the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, until 2007, when he was appointed as Mission Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Imphal. During his time in Texas, his bishop asked him to learn Spanish, which he willingly did. Desiring a change of location, Father Mailadiyil came to the Diocese of Saint Petersburg in 2007 and was appointed Parochial Vicar of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, New Port Richey, serving both the English- and Spanish-speaking communities. In 2009, he was transferred to Prince of Peace Parish, Sun City Center, where he continues to serve as Parochial Vicar.
Rev. Jacob Monteleone
New Orleans is the birthplace of Father Monteleone, who graduated from Notre Dame Seminary and was ordained for the Archdiocese of New Orleans on February 1, 1975. He was incardinated as a priest of the newly created Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux in 1977. In 1990, he came to the Diocese of Saint Petersburg and was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Ignatius of Antioch Parish, Tarpon Springs. He served in the same capacity at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, Spring Hill (1991) and Corpus Christi Parish, Temple Terrace (1991-1993). In 1993, Father Monteleone was appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Zephyrhills, while also serving as Pastor of St. Anthony School, San Antonio. From 1999 until his retirement in July 2015, he provided excellent care to the parishioners of Light of Christ Parish, Clearwater, as their pastor. For the past ten years, he has regularly provided pastoral and sacramental ministry to Christ the King Parish, Tampa. In 2019, at the request of his brother priests, he was honored with the Fr. Luis de Cancer Distinguished Priestly Service Award.
Rev. John Vignone
Since 2022, Father Vignone, a retired priest of the Diocese of Camden, has resided in St. Petersburg, providing ministry to local parishes when available. He is a native of Jersey City, New Jersey and was ordained for the Camden Diocese on May 24, 1975. During his five decades of priestly ministry, Father Vignone served in parishes and schools throughout his home diocese, including 12 years as a teacher at Saint James High School, in Carney’s Point and Paul VI High School, in Haddonfield. Prior to retirement, he served as Pastor of Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, in Egg Harbor Township, from 2004 to 2020.
60th Anniversary
Rev. Msgr. Algimantas Bartkus
Monsignor Bartkus was born in Kraziai, Lithuania, in 1940. Three years later, his family was forced to flee Lithuania and move to Germany. They later relocated to Sao Paolo, Brazil, where Monsignor Bartkus completed his high school education. Over the years, he would become fluent in Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, and English. His seminary formation took place at the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome. On July 11, 1965, he was ordained to the priesthood and was later incardinated into the Diocese of Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he provided pastoral care for Lithuanian-, Portuguese-, and English-speaking Catholic families, along with hosting a weekly Lithuanian radio program. In 1983, he moved back to Rome, where he was appointed Rector of St. Casimir Lithuanian College (Seminary). Two years later, he was named Prelate of His Holiness by Pope John Paul II, with the title of “Monsignor.” After 25 years in Rome, he returned to the U.S., and in 2013, retired and relocated to St. Pete Beach, where he has provided occasional ministry to the Lithuanian-speaking community.
Rev. Kenneth Gerth, MCCJ
Cincinnati, Ohio is the birthplace of Father Gerth, who was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1965 for the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. Throughout his 60 years of ministry, his pastoral experiences include service as a Vocation Director for the Comboni Missionaries, mission work in Uganda and Costa Rica, pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and Chaplain of St. Joseph Hospital, Tampa, having earned his certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains in 1996.
Rev. George Markwell, M Afr
Father Markwell is originally from Middletown, Ohio. On June 26, 1965, he was ordained to the priesthood for the Missionaries of Africa (formerly the White Fathers). He spent many of his years serving as Chaplain at Holy Cross Hospital, in Washington, D.C. and in 2015, he was appointed to the Missionaries of Africa retirement community, in St. Petersburg. While in retirement, he has offered ministry to local parishes, as needed.
65th Anniversary
Rev. Msgr. John A. Cippel
Born in Ford City, Pennsylvania, Monsignor Cippel was ordained on January 28, 1960 for the White Fathers (now Missionaries of Africa), in Carthage, Tunisia. He possesses a Master’s degree from Loyola University, Chicago, and a Doctorate of Ministry degree from Andover Newton Theological School, in Massachusetts. While with the White Fathers, Monsignor Cippel worked in both minor and major seminaries for the order. He also served as a Youth Chaplain in the Archdiocese of Mwanza, Tanzania. Upon locating to Florida, he served as Parochial Vicar of St. Martha Parish, Sarasota; St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Port Charlotte; and St. Mary Our Lady of Grace Parish, St. Petersburg. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Saint Petersburg in 1980. He would later be appointed and Pastor of St. Cecelia Parish, Clearwater, and St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, Spring Hill, from 1996 until his retirement in 2006. He later provided temporary assistance to Nativity Parish, Brandon and was appointed Spiritual Director at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach (until 2020). Since then, he has provided assistance to the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle and to Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Gulfport. He now resides at the St. John XXIII Residence, in Lutz, where he occasionally offers Mass for his fellow retired priests and other residents. In 1999, upon nomination by Bishop Robert Lynch, Monsignor Cippel was granted the ecclesiastical honor of Prelate of Honor by Pope John Paul II. The following year, his brother priests nominated him for the Fr. Luis de Cancer Distinguished Priestly Service Award.
Rev. Msgr. Richard P. Funke
Monsignor Funke is a native of Dyersville, Iowa. On January 30, 1960, he was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Dubuque, where he served as a Parochial Vicar, Pastor, Vice-Chancellor, Adjutant Judicial Vicar and Judicial Vicar. In 1991, Pope John Paul II bestowed the title “Prelate of Honor” upon Monsignor Funke. Since 2000, he has spent the winter and spring months in the Diocese of Saint Petersburg, providing assistance to the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, while spending the summer months at his home in Iowa.
Rev. Paul Goudreau
Rumford, Maine is the birthplace of Father Goudreau, who made his profession with the Augustinians of the Assumption and was ordained for the order on July 23, 1960. For the next ten years, he would teach in a prep school and college in Massachusetts, as well as in a seminary in New York. With the permission of his Provincial Superior, he moved to Tampa in 1970 and would spend the next five years serving as a Chaplain to the students at Tampa Catholic High School. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Saint Petersburg in 1984. Assignments in our Diocese include: Parochial Administrator pro temp of St. Mary Parish, Tampa (1974-1975); Director of the Catholic Student Center at U.S.F. (1975-1978); Parochial Vicar of St. Lawrence Parish, Tampa (1979-1983), the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle (1983-1985), and St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Hudson (1991-1997). Father Goudreau was also Pastor of Corpus Christi Parish, Temple Terrace (1985-1990); St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Holiday (1997-2003); and St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Hudson (2003-2008). He was granted retirement status on July 1, 2008, after which he assisted local parishes in west Pasco County.
