Abuse Survivors Invited to a Healing Mass

Suffering from an abusive relationship can be a traumatic experience that harms a person on many levels.

The Catholic Church seeks to help abuse survivors find healing through prayer and a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Bishop Gregory Parkes, leader of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, will offer a Healing Mass for those harmed by abuse and their loved ones.

Experts believe that spirituality can provide comfort and coping skills during and after an abusive relationship. For example, Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence, Inc. states on their website, “Faith and spirituality can be instrumental in supporting the grieving and healing processes of domestic violence survivors.”

During the Healing Mass, prayers will be offered for all victims of abuse or neglect, be it physical, sexual, emotional or spiritual. Also, prayers will be offered for all victims who have died from suicide because of overwhelming anxiety caused by abuse. Additionally, participants will pray for the protection of all minors and vulnerable people.

The Healing Mass will take place on Saturday, September 7th, beginning at 11:00a.m., at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, 5815 5th Ave N, St. Petersburg. All are welcome.

Opportunities for prayer with a priest or conversation with the diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator, Mr. John Lambert, L.C.S.W. will be available following the Mass.

The Mass will also be livestreamed at www.dosp.org/livestreamwww.facebook.com/DioStPeteand www.youtube.com/user/dioceseofstpete.
